January 2010 ON TARGET!!
Kudos to the bull's eye
While in San Francisco recently, Alice and I noticed a consistent name in the lists of donors to museums, social service agencies and community projects - Target. Target, the department store with the bull’s eye.
Quite impressive and even more a statement that Target commits 3% of its revenue to charity. That blew me away as to me revenue is sales and 3% of sales is incredible.
So back in Montreal I googled Target and charity and read some history and Target's charitable program and more. The facts are impressive:
- First: the charity is not based on revenue but on income or profit.
- Second: Target is up to 5% of its income as its community payback.
- The web site claims to be granting $3 million a week!
Target has a comprehensive grants system
divided into social services, culture, education,
community projects and veterans support. Researching some media compilations of US corporate giving, we find that Target has consistently been America's corporate leader, both in dollars of giving and the percentage number used against profits allocated to charity.
So kudos to Target - make lots of money!!!
